The Erratic Boulders Trail of Varese

Running between Bodio Lomnago and Mornago, the Erratic Boulders Trail invites visitors to explore the traces of a distant past — from the marks of the last Ice Age on the erratics of the Mornago hill to the man-made carvings on the Bodio boulder.

What are glacial erratics?

During the ice ages, enormous glaciers formed and crept slowly from the polar regions towards more temperate lands, scouring the ground and the rock beneath them. As they advanced, the boulders and stones they picked up were carried over great distances — across rough terrain and through valleys, ending up far from where they began. Glacial erratics are precious geological markers: they hold clues to a region’s climatic and geological history, and help us understand how glaciers moved and how the landscape evolved over time.

The enhancement project

The Erratic Boulders Trail is funded under measure M1C3 I 2.1 of the NRRP (Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan), with resources made available by the European Union as part of the same programme that includes the building of the NeoBodio Museum and the upgrading of the Besano Fossil Museum. The aim of the project is to create a trail through history and nature, leading to the discovery of these ancient remains.

The NeoBodio Museum of Bodio Lomnago

In the NeoBodio Museum will open in Bodio Lomnago, on the shores of Lake Varese: major archaeological finds recovered from the lakebed, a reconstruction of a pile-dwelling hut, and an immersive room screening never-before-seen footage of the pile-dwelling sites beneath the lakes of the Varese area.
